In early 2010, the International Movement against All forms Of Discrimination and Racism Asia Committee (IMADR) partnered with the European Commission in commencing activities to establish a Women’s Political Academy, Sri Lanka (hereafter WPASL).
IMADR’s Asia Committee (IMADR-AC), based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has been working with grassroots partners to ensure that minorities are not left out of the peace building process and post-tsunami reconstruction, and to help empower minorities and women. Despite the fact that women represent the majority of voters and population in Sri Lanka, women continue to be under represented and ignored political minority in the decision making process. Realizing the crude reality of marginalization of women from political processes and taking up the democratic challenge, the IMADR Asia Committee pioneered the establishment of Women’s Political Academy as an entity to ensure active and equal participation of women in governance and peace building. IMADR has been partnering with civil society and feminist organizations such as Center for Women and Development, Jaffna; Human Development Organisation, Kandy; Human Power Foundation, Galle; Ruhunu Gami Kanta Sanvidanaya, Hambantota; Women’s Development Foundation, Akkaraipattu, Society for Socio-Economic Development (Trinchomalee) and Rights Now Collective for Democracy(Colombo) and Networks of Mothers and Daughters of Lanka to promote regionalism, gender justice and to celebrate diversity and difference.
